In 2023, the UNESCO General Assembly adopted the "Policy Document on Climate Action for World Heritage." Following an analysis of the problems, the document outlines possible actions by stakeholders seeking to preserve World Heritage in the era of climate change. It also calls for a stronger integration of climate protection into monument preservation. The conference, taking place at the Heidelberg Center for Cultural Heritage (HCCH), presents the document in a German translation. Together with partners from various academic disciplines and practitioners in the fields of monument protection, cultural heritage, and nature conservation, the aim is to discuss its strengths and potential shortcomings – and to explore the possibilities and limitations of World Heritage protection in times of the climate crisis with site managers and stakeholders. The conference is co-organised by Heidelberg Center for Cultural Heritage (HCCH) at Heidelberg University the German National Committee of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS, Working Group on Climate Change). You can attend the event in person or online upon registration.
