New perspectives on Heritage in Brazil

As part of #2021debate, the New Heritage Approaches team compiled a number of interesting projects that give a face to cultural Heritage in Brazil. The projects are mostly authored by youth, young professionals and young researchers. All of them are linked with the proposal of new approaches on participatory processes, art and heritage linkages and heritage education as tools for access to citizenship, express local identities and democratization of heritage.
The narratives highlight various sociocultural aspects and contemporary artistic researches that draw attention to the countless challenges and complexities that Brazil is currently going through. Narratives that rescue speeches from vulnerable social groups and show the inventiveness of Brazilian artists and artisans. Enjo

Nau Cultural

Nau Cultural is a sociocultural project that creates, documents and distributes Brazilian popular art, in specific unique handmade contemporary pieces made with artisanal and traditional techniques. Through visiting the homes and ateliers of the artisans, initiators Isabela Carpena and Felipe Pithan pursue to tell the stories behind each piece, and dive into the universe and culture of the artists and the rich Brazilian culture they represent. Artists are collaborating based on a fair trade, respecting their livelihood and by ensuring social and financial recognition.

Memórias Do Futuro / Memories Of The Future

Memories of the Future is an initiative that brings contemporary Brazilian artists from different fields together, to discuss ‘New Heritage Approaches’ from the perspective of their respective artistic backgrounds. In a series of 12 documentaries of 6-10 minutes artists show their production. Through reflecting on their art, the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on the working conditions, concepts of heritage and memory, and personal reflections on the future world, diverse perspectives are identified to create a base for new narratives and future memories, giving an alternative to the existing heritage canons.

MAPPING EVERYDAY HERITAGE WITH CHILDREN AND YOUTH

This project (under development) aims to identify everyday heritage through the analysis of drawings about the journey between home and school produced by students from public schools in Rio de Janeiro state cities. It is a follow up of the project ‘Mapeamento Afetivo’ (Affective Mapping), where student drawings and texts were analysed as a mean to identify the values and desires regarding home-school trips. The drawings present potentials for the discovery of ‘new’ heritage, going beyond traditional landmarks in the landscape, such as Cristo Redentor, Pão de Açúcar and Baía de Guanabara, postcards of the ‘Cidade Maravilhosa’. The project seeks to contribute to inclusive heritage education, and seeks new heritage strategies based on the diffusion and recognition of everyday heritage, which (like children’s perceptions) have been disregarded in the current valuation criteria and in discussions about the character of cities.

Maré Cheia de Cinema / High Tide of the Cinema

This is a panorama of the Caiçara culture, representing traditions, conflicts and resistance through the lived experiences of the local communities. The video is produced for Maré Cheia de Cinema, an annual four-day beach film festival in Ponta Negra-Paraty (Brazil) that publicly screens Brazilian long and short movies, documentaries and animation. On the side, the organisation also provide Art, Movement and Ecology workshops, video workshops and a traditional Caiçara rowing boat race, to celebrate and foster the local culture.
